Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) on Speaker Election

USA Politics

House Republicans held another closed-door election for speaker of the U.S. House following Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) failed bid for the position. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) said that Republicans were beginning the nomination process all over again after speaker-designee Rep. Tom Emmer (MN) dropped out due to lack of Republican support in securing the 217 votes needed to win the speakership in the full House. When a reporter asked why Democrats, who also had a slim majority in the last Congress, did not have this same problem in electing a speaker, Mr. Gallagher replied that former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “ruled with an iron fist,” and people feared her.
